On Peppa Pig, Vet Fees and New Year's Resolutions

One of my goals for 2011, you may remember, was to spend less money! The year didn't start well. By the end of the first week in January we had not only forked out £100 for an emergency plumber to stop a leak that threatened to bring our ceiling down, but we also had to spend a similar amount of money to take our cat, Wallace, to the vet. We seemed to be haemorrhaging money.

For this reason, I've been particularly grumpy every time I've sat with Lara to watch the Peppa Pig episode 'Goldie the Fish' (which I seem to have watched about 4 times in the past week alone). Peppa's pet fish feels unwell so they trek into town where they spend approximately 1 minute at the Vets to be told there is nothing wrong and everyone goes home with smiley faces. In the real world, Peppa's mum would be charged upwards of £50 for this consultation which is over in the blink of an eye and they would all go home feeling cheated (and, even worse, feeling guilty for entertaining the idea that their pet isn't worth the money).

Thankfully Wallace is now fine. He's just old, and a bit grumpy. For a while I really resented the fact that we don't have cat insurance for Wallace but then, he's an old cat and pretty much nowhere would insure him. We've made some sensible precautions, financially, to cover vets fees but it just seemed like such a shame that we had to fork out all this cash in week one of a brand new year.

The other resolutions aren't going much better either. So far I've worn my same blokey trainers to work every single day. Fail. I've not had a chance to cook with Lara. Fail. And I've barely written any blog posts for ParentWheels. Fail. On the plus side, we have cleared out quite a lot of the junk from the house move but we're still a long way off.
