Plans for a Family Holiday In The Sunshine

At this time of year I can't help but start to plan my summer holiday. This year things will be very different - I have to plan for a trip that is suitable for both a 3-year-old AND a very young baby. I'm currently thinking about a European lakes and mountains getaway because I can't help but reminisce about our successful family holiday in the sunshine a little over a year ago. This blog post was written for the Tots 100 competition which is run in conjunction with Thomson Al Fresco holidays.

My favourite holiday ever was a trip to Switzerland when Lara had just turned one. Not only was it a great opportunity to meet up with family in Europe, but we took a road trip to Interlaken, a tourist resort in the centre of Switzerland that has everything you could ask for in a family holiday - stunning views, great food and drink, hotels to suit all budgets and no shortage of sights and entertainment whether you are in to watersports, hiking, shopping, theme parks or sight-seeing.

We visited Interlaken at the height of the summer season. It was bustling, but not heaving with people and as soon as you got away from the main high street the town was quiet and quaint with an alpine serenity. We stopped on several occasions for a sneaky beer and a welcome ice cream in one of the many cafes dotted around town.

We stayed in a local Gasthof which was really reasonably priced and was home to an eclectic mix of customers and staff from every country you could name! The Gasthof had large rooms, each with a balcony overlooking a quiet street where Lara would screech with excitement every time she saw a horse clip-clop by with another tourist on the carriage behind.

Interlaken in nestled between two lakes (hence the name... inter-lake ). The town is a couple of miles across and a fast-flowing waterway joins the two lakes. There are really good public transport links across the town by train, tram and bus.

We took a ride up into the mountains above Interlaken with a stunning panoramic view of the Jungfrau. Having a one year old with us, we only took a short walk in the hills but we managed to stop for another one of those sneaky beers while Lara wore her self out on the children's playground before we returned to the valley floor in Interlaken.

One afternoon we took down to the lake's edge to see the ducks. We even took a dip in the cool mountain water. Total heaven on a hot summer's day.
