Philips Avent 3-in-1 Electric Steam Steriliser Review

Even though I am still mainly breastfeeding, our steam sterliser is one of our most used kitchen gadgets. Every evening I use it to prepare a bottle, the breast pump and my milk saver - our Philips Avent 3-in-1 Electric Steam Steriliser takes pride of place in our kitchen nestled between the smoothie maker and the coffee machine!

The 3-in-1 Avent sterliser claims to be good for saving kitchen space because you can use it in three different formats. With just the big basket (for tall bottles), just the small basket (for soothers and teethers and small bottles) or with both baskets stacked on top of one another. In reality though it doesn't save much space because, when you are not using one of the baskets, you have to find somewhere for the spare basket to live - don't you? To me, the advantage of being able to only use the size of basket you need means that the time taken to sterilise is ever so slightly shorter because you only need to steam enough water for a smaller basket.

Sterilisation takes about 6 minutes.  It is incredibly easy; put water in the well at the base, put the baskets and the lid on top, press button and wait.  A small amount of excess steam escapes from the top of the baskets.  So long as you leave the lid closed, the contents stay sterile for 24 hours which is fab for me because sometimes Holly doesn't need a bottle in the evening so I can leave the bottle and breast pump there for the early morning feed without having to worry about sterilising in a hurry in the morning.

When Lara was a baby I had a second-hand (perhaps even third-hand) traditional Avent steam steriliser which served me well but which died after I failed to keep it descaled well enough (we live in a VERY hard water area).  I actually find it easier to descale this new style of steam sterliser because the well for the water is bigger and it is easy to see when the heating element is clean.  When I first started using it, I would occasionally suffer from the base of the bottom basket turning brown and smelling a bit caramel-like and the water well would go dark brown and icky... I read up about some tips on the Philips website and found it was to do with small remnants of milk remaining in the bottles etc. and that keeping the heating element clean would prevent this.  These days I clean and descale my steriliser once a week to keep it ship-shape.

Both of the baskets of the steriliser can take any brand of bottle (both wide and narrow neck) and have plenty of room for the various bits and bobs you need for feeding or weaning.  When it is fully loaded it takes 6 large bottles.  The SCF284 electric steam sterliser comes with one small newborn bottle and teat, a pair of plastic tongs (for taking the contents out without touching them with your fingers) and a newborn soother.

At around £60 it is quite an expensive piece of new baby kit but I think that it is good value for a product you will use daily for at least 6 months.

Milton Mini Portable Steriliser Review

I had been expecting to need some form of sterlisation utility to take with us on our Family Road trip across Europe so the Milton Mini portable soother steriliser seemed ideal because it would barely take up any space in our boot.

The Milton Mini is a small ball about 8cm across into which you can place a dummy when you need to sterilise it. The steriliser uses a combination of cold water and a single tiny Milton mini sterilisation tablet.

The Milton Mini has a little fabric handle which allows it to dangle off the handles of a buggy or to attach to your changing bag. I was worried about sloshing water inside the ball but in fact the sphere contains two sponges which absorb the solution and distribute it across the soother.

Sterilisation takes about 15 minutes. As a newbie to cold-water sterilisation I'm not sure whether this is fast or slow! When I'm out and about I think I'd want a quicker turnaround for a soother that needs to be used for an angry baby but then 15 minutes isn't that long in the grand scheme of things and afterwards the dummy is ready for use straight away.

I found the Milton Mini very easy to use, to assemble and maintain. I can imagine it would come in very useful given my previous experience of lost dummies at the bottom of a gungey changing bag. As it is, Holly won't take a soother (despite may attempts when all she needs is to suck on something to send her off to sleep) and so the Mini Milton didn't come with us to Poland but you never know, she may change her mind!

The Sunday Review – Closer to Nature Hygiene Range

We have been trying out the new range of hygeine products from Closer to Nature by Tommee Tippee. To me, the fact that Tommee Tippee are branching out into such things as sterilisation fluid, hand sanitiser and surface spray shows that they are really serious about becoming the UK's biggest all-round baby brand that covers all bases!

As you know, Lara has been teething a lot lately so we have been using a Gumigem teething necklace for her. Having packed away our steam and microwave sterilisers months and months ago, I hadn't yet really sterilised the teether, just given it a quick blast under the tap if it got dropped on the floor. I'm now able to use the Closer to Nature Soother, Teether & Teat wipes to clean the teether when it gets grubby. They are 100% biodegradable (we like this) and kill 99.9% of bacteria and germs (we like this too), there is no need to rinse things after you've cleaned them with these wipes which means that they're great to have on hand when out and about (I like to use them to clean the tops of Lara's beakers when they've been in the murky depths of the changing bag).

My favourite product from the new Close to Nature hygiene range is the hand gel. Before I became a mum, I used to keep a bottle of hand sanitising gel in my bag at all times (I started on my honeymoon in Africa where taps and soap weren't always on hand when travelling). When I was in hospital after the birth I was put off alcohol-based hand gels because the paediatrician on the ward pointed out that if I washed my hands with alcohol, then put my fingers in or around my baby's mouth, I might as well be offering them a vodka and coke! The Closer to Nature hand gel is alcohol free and is safe for use around babies and children. I found it to be effective and quick-drying. It smells good too and doesn't knock me out from fumes when I use it!

Other products in the range include a surface cleaning spray, great for using in and around the house... and a cold-water sterilising fluid which would have been a life-saver on holiday with Lara when she was a baby (we used to take our steam steriliser with us wherever we went!). All of their bacteria-beating products are made with a product called Byotrol which doesn't kill bacteria by poisoning them with chemicals, but instead is a lot milder, less toxic to animals and humans and is generally a safer, more gentle biocide than bleaches and disinfectants.

You can buy the new range of Closer to Nature hygeine products from Asda, Toys R Us and Tesco or find out more online at www.tommeetippee.co.uk
