Love Is... Blog Carnival

This Valentine's day I'm sharing the love with a collection of great blogs from across the Blogosphere all on the theme of "Love Is..."

Mellow Mummy Love Is

I'll kick things off withe this recipe idea for a healthy valentine's meal that is bound to impress - Slow-Cooked Persian venison with pomegranate and a parsnip & cumin mash.

Actually Mummy...has totally captured the essence of a great marriage in this, the online renewal of her wedding vows.

Louise from 'A Strong Coffee' has perfectly captured her love for her three boys in this beautiful photo collection.

Kheira from Array O Style has shared a soppy love poem for our blog carnival today - let's face it, if you're ever going to get a chance to be soppy, it's Valentine's day.

Donna from The Little Lillypad Blog has a series of Love Is... blog posts - this beautiful blog post captures the little things which made her engagement something very special.

Very Victoria Vocalises is celebrating a third anniversary and tells us what makes her relationship strong and why, for her, 3 is the magic number.

Miscarriage - Stories and Experiences From Bloggers

Last month I blogged about my own early miscarriage and I had such an overwhelming response from so many people who had been through the same thing as me that I decided that miscarriage should be the theme for this month's mellow mummy blogger's carnival.

Jo from LadyBlahBlahs has listed some of the strong feelings she felt having experienced at least 5 miscarriages before conceiving. She feels cheated out of having been able to enjoy pregnancy.

Ellen from In a Bundance wrote a heart-breaking piece about having to experience the pain and trauma of labour after a miscarriage she had previously not known about.

Cheryl from Madhouse Family Reviews featured a campaign last year for The Baby Loss Awareness Campaign which features some comforting statistics and advice. At her other blog, Welcome Back To The Madhouse, Cheryl shares a picture that her daughter drew in memory of her little sister who was never meant to be.

Hannah from Muddling Along Mummy wrote this lovely post about how, even with a miscarriage early in pregnancy, the baby feels real to you. More recently Hannah has blogged about the mixed emotions she has felt learning that a relative is pregnant. Hannah has some wonderfully honest posts about miscarriage on her blog that I've found touching and inspiring, do go and have a delve in her archives.

Tantrum Time - Tips for Coping With Trantrums

I simply can't believe that nobody out there wanted to share their experiences of coping with tantrums.

I received one lovely entry for this month's carnival from Ellen at In a bun dance. In this post Ellen explains the troubled relationship between her two year old toddler and her 11 year old with Aspergers. Do give it a read, it's a fascinating post about a stage in a toddler's life that is very relevant to me right now.

My own little Lara has recently turned two and her behaviour is, at times, wearing me down. I wrote this piece last month after a particularly eventful trip to Sainsburys.

Next month's blog carnival will be all about Miscarriage (which you may know, happened to me last month). I hope to have a few more entries than this month... please???

The carnival will take place on august 24th so I will need your entries by the 21st please. It can be on any aspect of miscarriage or still birth, I just want to try and encourage others to talk about it and to share their experiences because reading other people's accounts really helped me deal with it. If you have a story you want to tell but would rather not host it on your blog, or would rather remain annonymous then I would be happy to feature your post here on Mellow Mummy.

Email your entries to jumblyMummy@gmail.com or else leave me a link in the comments below.

See you next month.

Childrens Birthday Parties and Birthday Cakes - Bloggers Carnival

Welcome to my monthly blogging carnival! This month, in honour of Lara's 2nd birthday, we're sharing our stories about children's birthday parties and birthday cakes. Here's a selection of great posts with inspiration for party ideas and children's birthday cakes.

childrens birthday cakes

Cheryl at Welcome back to the Madhouse was made a pink birthday cake by her daughters! You can see the finished article in a post a couple of days later!

At A Matter of Choice a gorgeous young man has been celebrating his 2nd birthday with a fun party and a Mickey Mouse theme.

Susan K Mann celebrated her son's 4th birthday with a party at a soft play centre. A great idea for getting out of the house and taking some of the pressure off arranging a party.

Currently on A Major Love of Film there is a whole series of blog posts about party planning. From venue ideas to invitations. From party games to food inspiration. Its all there!

At Yummy Mummy, Flabby Tummy Laura has celebrated a 2nd birthday and a 4th birthday in the space of a week! This post sees the aftermath and a picture of some gorgeous looking cupcakes!

At Fuss Free Flavours there is a fab recipe for some 'Mad Scientist' cupcakes!

Kids Party Heaven is an entire blog on this month's carnival theme! Rather than choosing a specific post, I thought I'd just point you in the direction of the blog. Some of my favourite posts are on ideas for saving money but there are some really impressive recent posts on face painting ideas.

At Simply Fabulous there are some great pictures of a really wonderful first birthday, a brilliant cake and a very happy little girl.

And finally, here at Mellow Mummy we have been celebrating Lara's 2nd birthday. I blogged about her birthday cake (the photo above) and presents this year. Last year we had a birthday BBQ and Lara had a Makka Pakka cake; we also celebrated her first birthday with all of the other babies from our NCT group with a picnic in the park!

Call for Posts - Birthday Parties and Cakes Carnival

June is here already and that means that Lara is going to be 2. Bonkers.

To celebrate all things birthday-ish, this month's regular parenting blog carnival is going to be around the theme of children's birthday parties and birthday cakes. The carnival will be held on Tuesday 28th of June and so I will need your submissions by the end of Sunday 26th June which gives you plenty of time to either write a brand new post, or else delve through your archives to find me some juicy blog posts.

Feel free to interpret the theme as you wish - I'm open to stories about successful parties you may have hosted for your own children; perhaps a nightmarish experience you may have had; the politics of children's birthday parties; the overwhelming feeling of pride you feel when your children grow 1 year older?

I'm happy to host image-only blog posts of great parties or fabulous cakes; or recipes for children's party foods or cakes; I'm even happy to host reviews of party products or entertainers.

Leave me a comment with your link, tweet me (I'm @jumblyMummy) or drop me an email on jumblyMummy@gmail.com and then come back here on the 28th to read everyone else's posts.

Call For Posts – Real Nappy Carnival

On April 13th I will be holding a bloggers carnival all about real nappies. I'm looking for people to share their experiences with cloth nappies and to pass on any tips or tricks. Recently I've had several pregnant ladies ask me about reusable nappies – more people are thinking about them these days but until you've tried them, it's a big unknown. If you have a blog post you would like to share then either email me (jumblyMummy@gmail.com) or add the link to the comments below. I'm happy to host reviews, commercial and sponsored posts as long as they are relevant because the more information we can offer, the better. I'm also happy to host blog posts from people who don't use reusables – perhaps about why. Views, experiences or topical pieces are all welcome too. Come back on the 13th of April to read all about people's experiences with real nappies.

Bedtime Tips For Babies and Children - A Blogging Carnival

Welcome to the Mellow Mummy carnival of blog posts all about bedtime - an idea inspired by my cybermummy sponsor, Boots Parenting Club who currently have offers instore for Bathtime and Bedtime products (which is what inspired me to hold this carnival). We've had some great submissions about getting babies to settle, the transition from cot to bed, how to calm your little one down in time for bedtime and the tricks you use to get babies, toddlers and children to have a sound night's sleep.

When Lara was only 10 months old, I blogged about What time is bedtime? and had some great comments. At 16 months we moved her out of a cot, into a bed.

Louise at Bloggomy has 4 children and has shared some great tips on how to settle your baby to sleep and build a routine from day one.

Marilyn at Softthistle.net tells us about the medicine that has transformed the bedtimes for her autistic son.

Hayley from Simply Hayley looks back on 4 years of broken sleep and is looking back on the lessons she learned about how to cope with sleepless nights in order to make educated decisions with baby number two.

Mother Badger at Badger Mad has blogged about the inner conflict she faces with the fact she feeds her baby to sleep late at night (and enjoys it) and yet she longs to have her evenings back.

Becky from My Baby Blog shares her experiences with baby sleeping bags and positioning a baby in a crib. Is is time to move her merman out of a crib?

In contrast, at The gingerbread house all of the books and recommended routines were abandoned but it doesn't seem to have done any harm.

At MummyCentral there are some times about how to regain control of your own sleep patterns after aving a child. But with a two-year old who has never slept through the night, things can be hard work.

Bedtime Carnival - A Call For Posts

After last week's successful blog carinval all about teething, I've decided to run another one! Once again, the theme will be inspired by my Cybermummy sponsor, Boots Parenting Club, who currently have offers on bedtime and bathtime products in store.

So, now I am looking for your blog posts about how you ensure a good night's sleep. What bedtime routine do you follow? Do you enforce a routine? Does your little one struggle to settle? How do you cope with the sleepless nights from which parents inevitably suffer? How do you help your children relax and calm down ready for bed time? What time is bedtime?

The carnival will be held on the 9th of March. Email me a link to your post by the 7th March jumblyMummy AT gmail DOT com, or else leave the link in the comments section below.

As a little bit of inspiration, why not take a peek at the Pampers 'Land of Golden Sleep' where you can find tips from their resident 'Soothology' expert on how to relax your baby or toddler in preparation for a good night's sleep.

Perhaps, like many of the mummys that Pampers interviewed, you pushed your baby upto 639 miles per year in the buggy, just to get them to sleep? Or maybe you resort to taking them for a drive in the car, as do 34% of the parents they surveyed (a topic I've covered before on ParentWheels)? What lengths do you go to in order to ensure a good night's sleep for your little one?

Looking forward to reading all of your posts.

PLEASE NOTE: this is NOT a sponsored post and neither is the carnival. It's my own idea, it just so happens that the idea came after I received PR material from the brands above. Please don't let my mentions affect your decision to enter the carnival. :-)

Teething Pain - Tips and Experience from REAL Mums

My Cybermummy sponsor, Boots are currently running some great promotions on teething products in store, and by way of support, I thought I would run a blogger's carnival to share the worries, tips and experiences of real mums who have dealt with the horrors of teething pain.

I myself have been through the troubles of teething with little Lara. In March last year I blogged about teething pain breaking my heart. And then, After trying a number of different approaches to pain relief, I blogged about the results of our attempts to relieve teething pain. Yesterday I blogged about how severe the teething pain is for Lara now that she is a toddler and the back teeth are coming through.

Carly of Mummys's Shoes has a very mellow blog about her 1-year-old not yet having teeth and then, about arrival of the first tooth.

Hannah at Muddling Along Mummy has surprised herself by sticking with breastfeeding through the discomfort of teething.

At Diary of a First child there are some accurate observations of teething at around 2 months. And, in a separate blog post there are some details of a range of different natural teething remedies.

Emma from Me, the Man and Baby records some of the main signs of teething, and several different types of pain relief at the Born Free blog and reminds us that there IS light at the end of the tunnel.

There are also some really useful diagrams and guides to teething at TwoBecomeFour and some feedback on bickiepegs as a solution to the problem of teething.

At Little Green Blog you can find details of 4 natural remedies for teething.

Jenny at Gingerbread House wrote a post that really struck a chord with me - nobody prepares you for the horrors of teething, until you're a parent, you really can't comprehend how much of a struggle it is.

Emma at Mission to Motherhood has a great blog about her reluctance to use Calpol for the first time to combat teething pain.

Thanks for joining in everyone

Emma x

The Birth Story: In The Beginning...

Amy at ' And 1 more means 4 ' is hosting a birth story carnival to get her in the mood for number 5. I've been meaning to write mine for a while, so here it is, the story of how Lara came into the world.

It all started on a hot Tursday in June. I was already 6 days overdue. I had been off work for 3 weeks, I had entered EVERY competition on the entire internet. It was hot, my noisy neighbours were doing my nut in (a story for another day) and I was bored and fed up of waiting. I decided to do the thing my midwife had been going on about for months... I got down on my hands and knees and scrubbed the kitchen floor with a scourer. Within an hour I felt the first twinges!

That night, I went to bed with great expectations. I woke at 12.30 with the first contractions. Right from the start my contractions were about 5-6 minutes apart. I couldn't sleep so got up and started timing the contractions using ContractionMaster (they also do an Ipod app!). At about 4am the contractions started coming every 3 minutes, they weren't bad, just ehausting at that short an interval. We put the TENS machine on, bounced about the living room on the birthing ball and tried to take my mind off things.

At 11am on the Wednesday the contractions were strong and after a long bath and a few Paracetemol, the hospital suggested we come in. The drive to the hospital is 20 minutes and about half-way there, the contractions slowed down. The baby wasn't ready. The examination showed that I was barely dilated and by the time we left the hospital, the contractions had nearly stopped.

Obviously, as soon as I got home, things started happening again. I had another couple of long baths and more pills and at about 4 or 5pm I tried to have a sleep. I think I probably managed, through the help of the TENS machine numbing my mind and body, about an hour, maybe more of sleep. When I woke, the contractions were awesome. Mr B. cooked me a meal but I couldn't face eating. I gritted my teeth and tried to bare the pain but at about 9.30pm I rang the hospital and told them I couldn't wait any longer.

We arrived at the hospital in the dark and had to make our way around 2 million sides of a square through the night entrance to the delivery suite. When we arrived, there was no room at the inn. I was sent to the day care room for a 'sit down'... er, right. A miserable old bat (after lots of pestering from Mr. B.) brought me a canister of gas & air but it made me gag (reminded me too much of SCUBA diving, another story I will tell you at some point). We finally got a delivery suite at about 11.30pm and an examination showed I was over 7cm dilated. I asked to use the birthing pool and I was in the warm, relaxing water by midnight.

The birthing pool was great. I would highly recommend it and will certainly give it a go again next time. I am at my most relaxed in water and knew that I wanted to try a water birth. The labour progressed slowly but the water meant I was calm and relaxed. I don't think a single swear word passed my lips. At some point around 4am my waters broke (which is a weird sensation when you are yourself in water!). There was maconium in the discharge which (a) indicated that the baby was getting stressed and (b) meant that the pool had to be drained. I got out, lay down on a bed and realised quite how much pain-relief the water had been giving me... outside the water the pain was unbearable. An examination showed I was fully dilated and that the baby seemed fine so I was allowed to get back in the water and start pushing.

I have no idea how long I was pushing for but I know that I wasn't progressing (and that I was doing my own body a lot of damage in the process). The midwife noticed that the baby's heart rate was escalating and insisted I leave the pool. I was tired, exhausted and I wanted it all to be over. From this point onwards, it is all a bit of a blur, I was just so shattered.

I lay down on a bed because I didn't have the energy to do otherwise. I was hooked up to a heart-rate monitor and advised by a doctor to accept a Syntocinon drip to increase the contractions. Because I had not had any other pain relief, I was told that I was unlikely to be able to take the pain that the Syntocinon-induced contractions would bring so I was also offered an epidural. At this point I was so tired I really just wanted the whole thing to be finished. I took the drugs, had a great big needle inserted into my spine and tried to forgive myself for having not managed the water birth.

Myself and Mr. B. were left to have a sleep while the drugs took hold. When the midwife shift changed I was very emotional; the previous midwife gave me a kiss and wished me luck. The new midwife came in and cranked the drip up to 11. A little while later, the contractions started coming thick and strong but also the baby's heart rate went the roof.

The next few minutes were the most surreal of my life. A doctor examined me and found the baby to be wedged sideways in th ebirth canal. All hell broke loose. Doctors, midwives, anaesthetists, tea-ladies... everyone came into the room. I was handed sheet upon sheet of paper that read me my rights and asked for signatures. I was recommended for an emergency caesarean but thankfully the midwife managed to talk some sense into the doctor who agreed to attempt an assisted delivery first. The epidural was topped up, I was heaved onto a trolley and rushed into the operating theatre.

As the drugs took hold I started to shiver. The shakes were so severe that I was bouncing around on the table. I remember feeling very calm, in total contrast to Mr. B. who was panicking on my behalf. The drugs, the shakes, the bright lights, the total randomness of the whole situation in comparison to my birth plan... it all built up and I got the giggles!

The doctor attempted a vonteuse delivery. It failed. They then made an incision and attempted a forceps delivery – the last option before a c-section. After a lot of yanking, the baby finally came free! Lara was born at 8.59am on Thursday. At 8lb 12oz she was placed on my belly and the giggles turned to laughter, then to tears, and then more laughter.

The forceps delivery left a mark on Lara's face for a week or so, but it doesn't seem to have done her any lasting damage. The labour was hard work but I wouldn't have done it any differently other than waiting longer to attempt the initial hospital run. I just have to hope that if/when the next time comes, the labour will be shorter and easier.

Flying Families – A Blogging Carnival

Today I am spreading the blogger love in thanks for all the great tips I have been been given to help me remain mellow for my forthcoming trip across the Atlantic with a 1-year-old in tow.

I've compiled a list of all your great posts about flying with children so that we can share the pain and pass on hints. So, please ensure your trays are folded and your seats are in the upright position; fasten your seatbelts, sit back and enjoy the flight!..

Redtedart is now officially on 'travel strike', find out why at The Good Life Blog.

Natasha at Moaning Mummy tells us about a trip that is the stuff of nightmares!

The Dotterel is longing for an upgrade (and a holiday), read about his Traveller's Tales.

A Brit in Bosnia compares the stresses of flying with and without children in her entertaining post.

Saffia at Motherhood and Anarchy has a truely inspiring post about Travelling with Children and some great tips for flying with children; she also has some amazing photos on her site of some of her travels.

Last year, A Modern Mother reminded us that nightmare of long haul flights with children can be even worse for those around us but that it really does get easier when the kids get older.

Call For Posts – Flying Families Carnival

This week my sister got married, stateside! I wasn't at 'The Wedding' (boo) but I will be at 'The Wedding – Part Deux' in June and that, dear readers, is where you come in. The wedding takes place in New York and I am beginning to get slightly tetchy about the prospect of a 7-hour flight with a one-year-old in tow (Lara will have her first birthday in New York). Admittedly, we did manage an extremely successful trip to France when Lara was just 3 months old (despite the horrors of Gatwick security control and the logistics of breastfeeding in an aeroplane seat that isn't big enough to hold an adult, let alone one with a hungry baby) so I should be a dab hand at this, but I get the feeling that things could be VERY different this time around.

And so, I thought I would invite you all to submit to me your posts about the joys of flying with children. This is a chance for you to share your tips, your success stories, your trials and tribulations... basically anything that will help me and those like me, to prepare for a flight with a little one. The deadline for submissions is Friday 19th of March. The Flying Families carnival will be held on Monday the 22nd of March.

Submit your posts by adding your URL and comment below or by emailing them to me at jumblyMummy[at]googlemail[dot]com. I look forward to reading your stories.
